Concussions
Natural Aftercare for Concussion Patients in San Diego
If you have suffered a concussion, your experience has probably involved bedrest while recovering. However, most people view concussions as cured once the initial symptoms start to go away. But what if your symptoms are not going away, or if new ones are beginning to develop? You may be experiencing post-concussion syndrome.
Why do some concussions heal on their own while others cause ongoing symptoms? The difference may be in whether the initial injury causes an upper cervical misalignment.
Post-Concussion Syndrome Symptoms
Consider some of the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome:
- Headaches and migraines
- Vertigo
- Cognitive problems
- Difficulty sleeping
- Mood changes
The Effects of an Upper Cervical Misalignment
When the top bones in the neck are misaligned, it can result in a number of complications, including:
- Intracranial pressure – A misalignment can affect cerebrospinal fluid drainage. This, in turn, can cause fluid to pool. Intracranial pressure can be responsible for many of the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome, especially the cognitive problems.
- Reduced cerebral blood flow – Since the cervical spine facilitates blood flow to the brain, misalignments in the neck can affect cerebral blood flow. Vertigo and migraines have both been linked to problems with oxygen levels in the brain.
- Inhibited brainstem function – When the C1 (atlas) is misaligned, it can put pressure on the brainstem. This can affect sleep, mood, and many other factors related to ongoing concussion symptoms.
